Urban Decay Primer Potion vs Elf Mineral Primer

Urban Decay Primer Potion:

~claim: “This miracle eyeshadow primer is unmatched by any other in the beauty industry! The genie in this bottle fulfills three wishes: eyeshadow that lasts, more vibrant and lasting color, and absolutely NO creasing.”

~availablity: This product is available on Urban Decay’s website: www.urbandecay.com, Ulta (both online and in stores), and Sephora (online and in stores).

~packaging: Super cute – but overall useless.  The bottle is shaped so that you can’t reach the product on the sides with the doe foot applicator. They have recently “improved” the wand by bending it at the end.  I’m not sure how much this helps!

~lasting power: All day!

~crease prevention: No creasing!

~texture: A little like a body butter, but it dries pretty quickly.

~price: $16

Elf Mineral Eyeshadow Primer:

~claim: “This gentle and completely sheer Eyeshadow Primer has key vitamins A, C and E to prevent aging and moisturize the skin.  The formula glides on easily and disappears instantly to create longer-lasting, crease-proof eyeshadow.”

~availability: This product is only available on Elf’s website: www.eyeslipsface.com.

~packaging: Pretty plain – a normal clear tube with a black top and a doe foot applicator.

~lasting power: This makes my shadow last all day!

~crease prevention: Absolutely no creasing!

~texture: More watery then UDPP, but as you apply it so your lid it dries to a smooth almost power-soft finish.

~price: $3

~I think my favorite is pretty clear – these products do the exact same thing, the only major difference being the price.

Go for the cheaper of the two on this one!!

Bargain Finds: Urban Decay?!

22 Aug

For the past few years around the holiday season, Urban Decay has released a “Best of Urban” gift set.  The most recent sets being Spandex and Baked (pictured above).  Each set comes with a full-sized Heavy Metal Liner, a full-sized eyeshadow, a travel-sized 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, and a travel-sized Primer Potion.  Each set will run you about $32 USD.  So why am I bringing up last holiday season’s gift set?  Because I just bought one (Spandex) for $9.99 at Winners.  (Winners is like a Canadian version of T.J. Maxx or Marshalls for those who aren’t familiar).  Seriously, if you have a discount department store like this in your area, patrol it regularly for items like this.  The Winners near me just happens to carry Urban Decay, a brand who’s website doesn’t even ship to Canada!

Here’s a breakdown of what I got:

Heavy Metal Liner in Spandex: Super sparkly liner with rainbow glitter (the overall effect is mostly blue). Gorgeous! Regular price, $18.

Primer Potion: This is a cute travel size of one of my all-time favorite products.  It’s just an amazing eyeshadow primer that makes even the worst shadow vibrant and last all day.  This is a tiny travel size, but the regular bottle is $16.

Eyeshadow in Uzi: A really pigmented silver glitter shadow.  The packaging on Urban Decay’s single shadows is really cute; a metallic silver subway token-inspired pot.  Adorable! Regular price, $16.

24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero: Jet black and sily smooth, pretty much the perfect liner.  It definitely lives up to all the hype.  Again, this is a travel size, but the regular pencils are $17 each.

*My apologies for the swatch, it was late, so no natural light.  The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil is a lot darker in person.

Must-Have Series: Eyeshadow Primer

8 Jun

This is going to be a series of short posts describing products I think everyone should have in their makeup bag. The first in the series is an eyeshadow primer.

Ever feel like your eyeshadow needs to be really packed on to even see the color? Or find that it forms a crease by the end of the day? A primer prevents both of these things and more. It also allows for smoother blending and ensures your eyeshadow stays put all day. A lot of primers are on the pricey side, but there are a few drugstore options as well. Here are a few recommendations:

Too Faced Shadow Insurance:

Urban Decay Primer Potion (my favorite!):

L’oreal De-Crease:

MAC Paint Pots:

To illustrate, here are some swatches. The swatches on the left are over a primer, the ones on the right are shadow alone:
